Turns out this is not a solid method. As others have mentioned they may not be in the correct folder - they should be going into documents. In Calibre, it shows them as being on it, but when I actually eject and look on the actual Kindle itself they're not there. The problem seems to have started or worsened after the last Kindle Fire upgrade.
